Project Overview:

Background:

Herefordshire Housing is a not-for-profit housing association that manages and maintains over 5,800 homes.

In 2018, it commissioned the first of two phases of external wall insulation work involving 59 Non-Traditional Cornish-style bungalows in Redhill. The properties would all be occupied and were of a pre-fabricated pre-reinforced concrete (PRC) panel construction.

The Brief:

In addition to producing important energy efficiency improvements, it was important that the chosen system would be sympathetic to the design of the distinctive Cornish properties, and that the finish would continue to look clean and bright.

Design & Specification:

The external wall insulation system chosen for the scheme was PermaRock's EPS Premium, together with a Silicone Ultra K-Finish and/or brick effect render finish.

PermaRock EPS Premium is a lightweight external wall insulation system based on expanded polystyrene (EPS). It can be installed in thicknesses up to 300 mm and it can assist in achieving Code for Sustainable Homes Levels 4 - 6 and Passivhaus Standards.

PermaRock SiliconeUltra K Finish is a textured, through-coloured render that is lightweight, flexible and water repellent. It is also highly resistant to the accumulation of dirt. Available in a wide choice of colours, it offered the client team considerable scope in terms of design and aesthetics.

PermaRock Brick Effect Render is a polymer-modified cement-based render designed to simulate the appearance of brickwork. It incorporates a silicone water repellent, and is particularly suited to projects where new brickwork cannot be used or where a brickwork appearance is desired.

Results:

Phase 1 progressed smoothly and it was competed on budget. Accordingly, the client approved a second phase, also in the Redhill area, but featuring 70 bungalows that required similar works. Again, the work was delivered effectively and in a timely manner, with no quality issues. The resulting improvements helped to improve the external appearance of the homes, to reduce residents’ energy bills, and to make the homes warmer and more comfortable places to live.
