Project Overview:

Background:

This scheme for Bolsover District Council was carried out under the Local Authority Delivery (LAD) scheme Phase 2. It followed an earlier (Phase 1B-funded) scheme that delivered decarbonisation improvements to 79 homes. The Phase 2 work focused on 64 occupied properties and was carried out in accordance with the demands of PAS2030:2019.

The scheme entailed the installation of a number of energy efficiency measures, together with structural repairs. Amongst others, improvements included top-up loft insulation, new energy efficiency glazing, and replacement cavity wall insulation. However, one of the most important components was the use of external wall insulation to reduce heat-loss through the solid brick walls.

The Brief:

The project called for a whole-house retrofit approach and, consequently, the EWI design was developed with input form other stakeholders. The EWI system itself would have to be designed and installed on a property-by-property basis, and would need to include an attractive, weatherproof finish.

Design & Specification:

The system chosen for the scheme was PermaRock’s EPS Premium External Wall Insulation System, together with PermaRock Dry Dash finish.

PermaRock EPS Premium is a lightweight external wall insulation system based on expanded polystyrene (EPS) and microscopic particles of graphite for enhanced thermal performance. It can be installed in thicknesses up to 300 mm and it can assist in achieving Code for Sustainable Homes Levels 4 - 6 and Passivhaus Standards. It also enables the creation of extremely airtight façades.

PermaRock Dry Dash finish is a traditional decorative render that produces a tough, durable, and almost maintenance-free finish to exterior walls. It comprises pre-washed Dashing Aggregates, together with a polymer enriched mineral-cement Dashing Mortar. It is available in colours including Grey, White, Yellow, Cream, Red and Pink, with other shades made to special order and subject to minimum order quantities.

Result:

The two phases were completed on schedule and have yielded appreciable energy savings for residents. The accompanying photographs show the bright, clean appearance of the finished properties.
